Part 1 · Interview
Laughing
Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.
What kinds of things make you laugh?
Funny videos of animals always make me laugh, especially cats doing silly things. My friends make me laugh a lot too, because we share the same sense of humour. And I love comedy series.
- always make me laughare always funny for me
- silly thingsfunny, foolish actions
- the same sense of humourwe find the same things funny
Do you like making other people laugh? Why?
Yes, I do. When people laugh, the atmosphere becomes relaxed and friendly. I'm not a great comedian, but I like telling funny stories about things that happened to me. It makes me happy to see others smile.

Is it important for people to laugh? Why?
Yes, very important. Laughing reduces stress and makes people feel closer to each other. Some studies say it's even good for your heart. Life can be hard, so we need to laugh as often as we can.
- reduces stressmakes stress less
- feel closer to each otherfeel more connected
- as often as we canas many times as possible

Part 2 · Cue card
An idea you had for improving something at work or college
You get 1 minute to prepare and then speak for 1 to 2 minutes. Follow the four points on the card in order.
Candidate task card
Describe an idea you had for improving something at work or college.
You should say:
- when and where you had your idea
- what your idea was
- who you told about it
- and explain why you thought it would make an improvement
Start
I'd like to talk about an idea I had at university to improve the library. It was a small idea, but it made a big difference.
When and where
It was during exam time in my third year. The library was always full, and students waited outside for a free desk, sometimes for an hour.
What the idea was
I noticed that many desks had bags or books on them, but nobody was sitting there. People left their things and went for lunch for two hours. So my idea was a simple booking system. Students could book a desk for two hours using a QR code, and if they didn't come back, the desk became free.
Who you told
First, I told my friends, and they liked it. Then, I wrote an email to the head of the library. She invited me to a meeting, and I explained my idea with a short presentation.
Why it was an improvement
I thought it would help because more students could use the same number of desks. The library tried it the next term, and it worked well. Waiting times became much shorter. I felt really proud, because a simple idea solved a real problem for hundreds of students.

Part 3 · Discussion
New ideas
Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.
Should education be about memorising the important ideas of the past?
Partly. Students need to learn important knowledge from the past, like history and science. But only memorising isn't enough. They also need to understand ideas, question them and use them to solve new problems.
- memorisinglearning by heart
- Partly.only in some ways
- question themask if they are true
Should education encourage students to have their own new ideas? Why?
Yes, definitely. The world changes very quickly, and we need people who can find new solutions. If schools only teach students to repeat answers, they won't be ready for the future. Creative students become creative workers.
- find new solutionsdiscover new answers
- repeat answerssay the same answers again
- ready for the futureprepared for later life
How could teachers help students develop and share their own ideas?
Teachers can ask open questions, which have more than one answer. They can give students projects where they choose the topic. And they should create a safe atmosphere, where students aren't afraid of saying something wrong.
- open questionsquestions with many possible answers
- a safe atmospherea comfortable environment
- afraid of saying something wrongworried about making mistakes
Should employers encourage workers to have new ideas? Why?
Yes. Workers often know the problems better than managers, because they do the work every day. If companies listen to them, they can save money and improve their products. Workers also feel more valued and motivated.
- employerscompanies or bosses who give jobs
- save moneyspend less
- feel more valuedfeel more important
Do people sometimes dislike ideas just because they're new? Why?
Yes, I think so. Many people feel comfortable with what they know, and change can feel risky. They're afraid something will go wrong. Also, new ideas often mean more work at the beginning, so people resist them.
- feel comfortable with what they knowlike familiar things
- change can feel riskychange seems dangerous
- resist themtry not to accept them
Which is more difficult, having new ideas or putting them into practice?
I think putting them into practice is more difficult. Having an idea can take one minute, but making it work needs time, money and a good team. For a successful company, both are important, but practice is what brings results.
- putting them into practicemaking them happen in real life
- making it workmaking it successful
- practice is what brings resultsdoing is what gives success
