Part 1 · Interview

Flowers

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

Do you like to have flowers in your home? Why?

Yes, I do. Flowers make a room look brighter and feel more alive. I usually have a small plant on my desk and fresh flowers on the table when guests come. They also smell lovely.

  • feel more aliveseem full of life
  • when guests comewhen visitors arrive
  • They also smell lovelythey have a nice smell

Where would you go to buy flowers? Why?

I usually go to a flower shop near the metro station. The owner is friendly, and the flowers are fresh. For bigger occasions, like weddings, people go to the big flower market in the city, where prices are lower.

  • a flower shopa florist
  • For bigger occasions, …for important events
  • prices are lowerthings are cheaper

On what occasions would you give someone flowers?

I'd give flowers on birthdays, at weddings and when visiting someone in hospital. When you visit someone's home for the first time, flowers are a nice gift too. Some people also give flowers to say sorry.

  • visiting someone in hospitalseeing a sick person
  • for the first timethe first time ever
  • to say sorryto apologise

Are flowers important in your culture? Why?

Yes, very. Persian gardens are famous, and roses are a big part of our poetry. We use rosewater in food and in religious ceremonies. At Nowruz, many families buy hyacinths, which are flowers with a strong, sweet smell.

Ready 1:00

Start

I'd like to talk about a meeting at my company about two years ago. I remember it because it was the first time I presented my own idea.

When and where

It was held on a Monday morning, in the big meeting room on the top floor. The room had glass walls, so everyone in the office could see us.

Who was there

There were about ten people: my manager, the head of the company, people from the design team and two people from marketing.

What you talked about

The meeting was about how to improve our mobile app. Many customers were complaining that it was slow and confusing. I had an idea to make the main page much simpler, and I presented it with some slides. After that, everyone discussed the idea and asked questions.

Why you remember it

I remember it because I was extremely nervous. My hands were shaking, and I spoke too fast at the beginning. But the head of the company liked my idea, and they decided to use it. That meeting gave me a lot of confidence, and after that, I wasn't afraid to share my ideas at work.

  • I presented my own ideaI showed and explained my idea
  • It was held on…it took place on
  • the head of the companythe boss of the whole company
  • were complaining that…were saying they were unhappy
  • My hands were shakingmy hands moved because I was nervous
  • gave me a lot of confidencemade me believe in myself

Part 3 · Discussion

Meetings

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

What are the different types of meetings that people often go to?

At work, people go to team meetings, planning meetings and meetings with clients. At school, there are parent-teacher meetings. There are also neighbourhood meetings, for example in apartment buildings, and online meetings, which are very common now.

  • meetings with clientsmeetings with customers
  • parent-teacher meetingsmeetings between parents and teachers
  • very common nowhappen a lot these days

Some people say no one likes going to meetings. What do you think?

I think that's often true, because many meetings are too long and not well organised. People feel they're wasting time. But a short, clear meeting with a goal can be very useful. The problem is bad meetings, not meetings in general.

  • not well organisedbadly planned
  • wasting timeusing time badly
  • meetings in generalall meetings

Why can it be important to go to meetings?

Meetings help people share information and make decisions together. Everyone hears the same message, so there are fewer misunderstandings. They also help teams build relationships, especially when people work in different places.

  • make decisions togetherdecide as a group
  • fewer misunderstandingsless confusion
  • build relationshipsmake connections stronger

Why do world leaders often have meetings together?

They meet to solve problems that affect many countries, like wars, climate change and trade. Meeting face to face helps build trust. And it shows the world that countries are working together.

  • affect many countrieshave an effect on many countries
  • face to facein person
  • build trustmake trust stronger

What difficulties might there be in organising meetings between world leaders?

Security is a big challenge, because leaders need a lot of protection. Leaders are also very busy, so finding a date is difficult. And there can be language and cultural differences, and sometimes political disagreements about where to meet.

  • Securitysafety and protection
  • finding a datechoosing a day that works
  • political disagreementsdifferent political opinions

Will meetings between world leaders become more or less frequent in the future?

I think they'll meet more often, but many meetings will be online. Online meetings are cheaper, faster and safer. But important agreements will still need face-to-face meetings, because personal contact matters.

  • frequenthappen more often
  • cheaper, faster and safera list of advantages
  • personal contact mattersmeeting in person is important
