Part 1 · Interview

Your country

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

Which part of your country do most people live in?

Most people live in the north and the west, where there's more water and the land is good for farming. Tehran, the capital, is in the north, and it's home to about nine million people. The centre and east are mostly desert, so fewer people live there.

  • the land is good for farminggood for growing food
  • it's home to…… people live there
  • fewer people live therea smaller number

Tell me about the main industries there.

The biggest industry is oil and gas. We also produce cars, steel and petrochemicals. Agriculture is important too, especially pistachios, saffron and fruit. And of course, carpets are a famous traditional industry.

  • petrochemicalsproducts made from oil

How easy is it to travel around your country?

It's quite easy. There are good roads between the big cities, and long-distance buses are cheap and comfortable. There are also trains and domestic flights. The only problem is that the country is very big, so some trips take many hours.

  • long-distance busesbuses for long trips
  • domestic flightsflights inside the country
  • some trips take many hourssome journeys are long

Has your country changed much since you were a child?

Yes, a lot. Cities have grown much bigger, with tall buildings and new highways. Almost everyone has a smartphone now, which wasn't true when I was a child. Prices have also gone up a lot.

Start

I'd like to talk about Maryam Mirzakhani. She was a mathematician from my country, and she's one of the people I admire most.

Who she was

She was born in Tehran in 1977. She studied maths at Sharif University, and then she did her PhD at Harvard in the United States. Later, she became a professor at Stanford University.

What she did

She worked on very complex problems about the shapes of curved surfaces. Honestly, I don't understand her work, but other mathematicians say it was brilliant and completely new.

Why she is well-known

In 2014, she won the Fields Medal, which is like the Nobel Prize for mathematics. She was the first woman ever to win it. Sadly, she died of cancer in 2017, when she was only forty.

Why you admire her

I admire her because she showed that a girl from my country could reach the top of the world in science. She was also very humble. She said that she wasn't very interested in maths as a child, and that hard work and curiosity were more important than talent. Her story inspires many young people, especially girls.

Part 3 · Discussion

Fame

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

What kinds of people become famous these days?

Today, many people become famous through social media, like influencers and YouTubers. Athletes, actors and singers are still famous too. Sometimes, people become famous for one funny video, which wasn't possible in the past.

  • through social mediausing social media
  • YouTuberspeople who make videos for YouTube
  • which wasn't possible in the pastthis is new

Is this different from what made people famous in the past?

Yes, it's different. In the past, people usually became famous for big achievements, like winning a war, writing great books or discovering something. Today, people can become famous without a real achievement, just for being entertaining online.

  • big achievementsgreat successes
  • without a real achievementwithout doing something great
  • being entertainingbeing fun to watch

How do you think people will become famous in the future?

I think social media will still be very important, but maybe in new forms, like virtual reality. People might also become famous for helping the planet, for example inventing clean energy. And unfortunately, maybe AI characters will become famous too.

  • in new formsin new ways
  • helping the planetdoing good for the Earth
  • clean energyenergy that doesn't pollute

What are the good things about being famous? Are there any disadvantages?

Famous people often have money, and many doors open for them. They can also use their fame to help good causes. But they have no privacy. Photographers follow them, and people criticise everything they do. That can be very stressful.

  • many doors open for themthey get many opportunities
  • help good causessupport charities and good ideas
  • criticisesay bad things about

How does the media in your country treat famous people?

The media usually talks about famous people a lot, especially actors and football players. Sometimes it's positive, but sometimes the news is about their private problems, which I think is unfair. Social media can be even worse, with many rude comments.

  • talks about … a lotmentions often
  • their private problemspersonal issues
  • rude commentsimpolite messages

Why are ordinary people interested in the lives of famous people?

Famous people seem to have exciting lives, so people are curious. Some people also want to copy their style or success. And reading about celebrities is an easy way to escape from our own problems for a while.

  • are curiouswant to know
  • copy their styledress or act like them
  • escape from our own problemsforget our problems
  • for a whilefor a short time
