Part 1 · Interview

Food and cooking

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

What kind of new food would you like to try? Why?

I'd love to try authentic Japanese food, like real sushi and ramen in Japan. I've eaten sushi here, but I'm sure it's different in Japan. I'm curious about the fresh fish and the special flavours.

  • authenticreal, original
  • I'm sure it's differentI believe it isn't the same
  • I'm curious about…I want to know about

Do you like cooking? Why?

Yes, I enjoy it, especially at the weekend, when I have time. Cooking helps me relax, and I love seeing my family enjoy the food. During the week, though, I usually cook quick and simple meals.

  • Cooking helps me relaxit makes me calm
  • quick and simple mealseasy food that's fast to cook

Do you prefer home-cooked food or food from restaurants? Why?

Home-cooked food, for sure. It's healthier, because you know what's in it, and it's much cheaper. Restaurant food is nice for special occasions, but it's often too oily or salty.

Ready 1:00

Start

I'd like to talk about gardening. It's a hobby I started quite recently, but I really love it.

How you became interested

During the pandemic, I spent a lot of time at home and felt bored. My mother gave me some seeds, and I planted them in pots on my balcony. When the first small plants appeared, I was so excited.

How long you've been doing it

I've been gardening for about three years now. I started with herbs, like mint and basil, and now I also grow tomatoes, peppers and some flowers.

Why you enjoy it

I enjoy it because it's very calming. When I water the plants in the evening, I forget about work. I also love watching things grow day by day. And there's nothing better than eating a tomato you grew yourself.

Benefits

It has many benefits. It reduces my stress and gives me a reason to get away from screens. I eat more vegetables now. I've also met other people who love gardening, and we share seeds and advice. It has taught me patience, because plants don't grow faster just because you want them to.

  • quite recentlynot long ago
  • I planted them in potsput seeds in soil in containers
  • I've been gardening for…present perfect continuous
  • very calmingmaking me calm
  • day by dayslowly, every day

Part 3 · Discussion

Hobbies and leisure time

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

Is having a hobby good for people's social life? In what way?

Yes, definitely. Hobbies help people meet others with the same interests. For example, people who like hiking can join a group and make new friends. Hobbies also give people interesting things to talk about.

  • with the same interestswho like the same things
  • join a groupbecome a member of a group
  • interesting things to talk abouttopics for conversation

Are there any negative effects of spending too much time on a hobby?

Yes. Some people spend so much time on their hobby that they forget their family or their work. Some hobbies are also expensive, like collecting things, so people can spend too much money. Video games can become an addiction.

  • so much time … that…so + much + that shows the result
  • forget their familydon't pay attention to family
  • become an addictionbecome a habit you can't stop

Why do people need to have an interest or hobby?

A hobby gives people something to enjoy outside work or study. It reduces stress and makes life more interesting. Hobbies also help people learn new skills and feel proud of what they can do.

  • outside work or studyapart from work or study
  • reduces stressmakes stress less
  • feel proud of what they can dobe happy about their abilities

In your country, how much time do people spend on work and on leisure? Is it a good balance?

Most people work long hours, often more than nine hours a day, and many have a second job. So they have very little leisure time. I don't think it's a good balance. People are tired, and they don't have enough time for family and health.

  • work long hourswork many hours
  • a second jobanother job in addition
  • a good balancethe right mix

Has the amount of free time changed much in the last fifty years?

I think so. Fifty years ago, many people worked on farms from early morning until dark. Machines have made work easier. But today, people work in offices for long hours and check emails at home. So in some ways, we have less free time.

  • from early morning until darkall day
  • Machines have made work easiermachines help us
  • in some wayspartly

Will people have more or less free time in the future? Why?

I hope more. Robots and artificial intelligence will do many tasks, so people may work fewer hours. Some countries are already trying a four-day working week. But it depends on whether companies share the benefits with workers.

  • I hope more.a short hopeful answer
  • work fewer hourswork less time
  • a four-day working weekworking four days a week
  • share the benefitsgive some of the good results
