The internet

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

How often do you use the internet?

Every day, many times a day. Honestly, I think I'm online most of the time, because my phone is always connected. I check messages, read the news and listen to music online.

  • Honestly, …to tell the truth
  • I'm online most of the timeconnected to the internet a lot

What's your favourite website? Why?

My favourite website is YouTube. You can find a video about anything there, from cooking to programming. I've learned a lot of useful skills from it, like how to fix things at home. And of course, it's great for entertainment.

  • useful skillshelpful abilities
  • it's great for entertainmentit's good for fun

Should children be allowed to use the internet without supervision? Why?

No, I don't think young children should. The internet has a lot of dangerous content and some dangerous people. Parents should check what their children watch and use child-safe apps. Teenagers can have more freedom, but they still need some rules.

  • supervisionsomeone watching and controlling
  • dangerous contentharmful videos or pictures
  • child-safe appsapps safe for children
  • they still need some rulesthey need limits

Ready 1:00

Start

I'd like to talk about a pair of hiking boots that my uncle gave me. I liked them a lot, and I still use them.

What it was

They were strong, waterproof hiking boots, dark brown, with thick soles. They were very good quality, from a famous outdoor brand.

Who gave it

My uncle gave them to me. He's a mountain climber, and he has climbed many of the highest mountains in my country.

Why he gave it

He gave them to me for passing my university entrance exam. He also wanted to invite me to climb Damavand with him, the highest mountain in Iran. He said I couldn't climb it in normal trainers.

Why you liked it

I liked them because they were the start of a new hobby for me. Two months later, we climbed Damavand together, and these boots kept my feet warm and dry all the way to the top. Every time I go hiking now, I wear them and remember that amazing trip with my uncle.

Part 3 · Discussion

Presents and charity

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

On which occasions do people in your country usually give presents?

People give presents at Nowruz, for birthdays, weddings and when a baby is born. When someone moves into a new house, people bring a gift too. It's also common to give a gift when a student passes an important exam.

  • occasionsspecial events
  • when a baby is bornafter birth
  • moves into a new housestarts living in a new home

How important is it to wrap presents in an attractive way?

I think it's quite nice, but not very important. Nice wrapping shows that you made an effort, and it makes opening the gift more exciting. But the gift itself, and the thought behind it, are much more important.

  • wrap presentscover them with paper
  • you made an effortyou tried
  • the thought behind itthe care and idea

Do people usually open presents immediately or later? Why?

In my country, people often open presents later, after the guests leave. In the past, it was considered a bit impolite to open them in front of everyone. But this is changing, and at birthday parties, many people open presents straight away.

  • it was considered a bit impolitepeople thought it was a little rude
  • in front of everyonewhere all can see
  • straight awayimmediately

How important is it for people to give to charity? Why?

It's very important. Not everyone has enough money for food, medicine or education. When people give to charity, even a little, they help people in difficult situations. It also makes society kinder and stronger.

  • give to charitygive money to help people
  • even a littleeven a small amount
  • in difficult situationsin hard times

What do you think the role of official charities should be?

Official charities should help people that the government can't reach, like poor families in villages or children who need surgery. They should also be very transparent, so people know exactly how their money is used.

  • official charitiesregistered charity organisations
  • can't reachcan't help directly
  • transparentopen and honest about money

Why can charities sometimes help people more effectively than the government?

Charities are often smaller and faster. They don't have as much paperwork, so they can help quickly in an emergency. They also often work closely with local people, so they understand exactly what people need.

  • more effectivelywith better results
  • smaller and fastera simple comparison
  • paperworkofficial forms
  • work closely with local peoplework directly with people there
