Part 1 · Interview

Reading

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

Did your parents read to you when you were a child?

Yes, my mother read to me almost every night. She usually read old Persian stories, and sometimes she made up her own. I loved those moments. I think that's why I still enjoy reading today.

  • read to meread stories aloud for me
  • made up her owncreated her own stories
  • that's why…show the result

Do you read for pleasure very often?

Not as often as I'd like. During the week, I'm too tired after work. But on Friday mornings, I always read for an hour or two with a cup of coffee. It's my favourite part of the weekend.

  • for pleasurefor fun, not for work
  • Not as often as I'd likeless than I want
  • with a cup of coffeea nice detail

What kinds of books or magazines do you buy?

I mostly buy novels, especially crime stories. I love trying to guess who did it before the end. I also buy books about psychology. I don't buy many magazines now, because I read articles online.

  • crime storiesstories about solving crimes
  • guess who did ittry to find the criminal
  • I read articles onlineI read on the internet

Which do you find easier, reading in English or writing in English? Why?

Reading is much easier for me. When I read, I can guess new words from the context. Writing is harder, because I need to choose the right words and use correct grammar. I often check my sentences many times.

  • guess new words from the contextunderstand from the other words
  • check my sentences many timeslook again carefully

Start

I'd like to talk about my grandfather, my father's father. He's eighty-five, and he's the best storyteller I know.

Who he is

He was a farmer for most of his life, in a village near Hamadan. Now he lives in the city with my uncle's family, because he can't work on the farm anymore.

What he is like

He's small and thin, with white hair and a big white moustache. He walks slowly now, but his mind is still very sharp. He's patient, funny and very wise.

How often you see him

I see him every week, usually on Friday. We sit in the garden, drink tea and talk for hours.

Why you enjoy talking to him

I enjoy talking to him because he has lived through so much. He tells me how life was before cars and electricity in the village. He also gives me good advice. When I have a problem, he listens quietly, and then he says something simple that helps me see things differently. I learn more from him than from many books.

  • the best storyteller I knowthe person who tells stories best
  • he can't work … anymorenot now, but in the past
  • his mind is still very sharphe still thinks clearly
  • he has lived through so muchhe has had many experiences
  • see things differentlyunderstand in a new way
  • I learn more from him than from many booksa strong comparison

Part 3 · Discussion

Older people in society

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

In your country, do most grandparents live with their children and grandchildren?

Not most, but many. In the past, it was very common for three generations to live together. Today, many grandparents live alone or with their partner, but usually near their children. When they get very old, they often move in with one of their children.

  • Not most, but many.a careful answer
  • three generationsgrandparents, parents and children
  • move in withstart living with

What are the advantages and disadvantages of grandparents living with the family?

The main advantage is that grandparents can help with the children, and children learn from them. Grandparents also don't feel lonely. The disadvantage is less privacy, and sometimes there are arguments about how to raise the children.

  • help with the childrenhelp look after the children
  • don't feel lonelydon't feel alone
  • less privacyless personal space
  • how to raise the childrenhow to bring them up

Why do some people feel unhappy when they first retire?

Work gives people a routine and a purpose. When they retire, suddenly they have nothing to do every morning. They also miss their colleagues. Some people feel that they're not useful anymore, which can make them sad.

  • a routine and a purposea daily plan and a reason
  • suddenly they have nothing to doquickly no work
  • not useful anymoreno longer needed

What hobbies do people enjoy after they retire?

Many retired people enjoy gardening, walking and reading. Some start new hobbies, like painting or learning a language. Others volunteer to help in their community. And of course, many enjoy spending time with their grandchildren.

  • gardeninggrowing plants and flowers
  • start new hobbiesbegin new activities
  • volunteerwork without pay to help

What problems can happen when the number of elderly people in a country keeps rising?

There are fewer workers to pay taxes, but more people who need pensions and health care. This puts pressure on the economy. Hospitals may become crowded, and there may not be enough people to look after the elderly.

  • keeps risingcontinues to go up
  • pay taxesgive money to the government
  • puts pressure on the economycreates stress for the economy
  • look after the elderlytake care of old people

How might the lives of elderly people be different in the future?

I think they'll be healthier and live longer, thanks to better medicine. Technology will help them too, for example robots that help at home or watches that call a doctor in an emergency. But they might also be lonelier, because families are smaller.

  • thanks to better medicinebecause of better medicine
  • in an emergencyin a sudden dangerous situation
  • they might also be loneliera possible problem
