Part 1 · Interview

Family

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

How much time do you spend with your family?

Quite a lot. I still live with my parents, so we have breakfast and dinner together every day. At weekends, we usually visit my grandparents or go out together. I think I'm lucky, because I'm very close to my family.

What do you like to do together as a family?

We love going on road trips. Every spring, we drive to a different city and explore it together. At home, we often play cards in the evening, and my father always tries to win! We also cook big meals together on holidays.

Do you get along well with your family?

Yes, mostly. Of course, we sometimes argue, especially my sister and I, about small things like the TV or the bathroom. But we never stay angry for long. We always make up quickly.

Are people in your country generally close to their families?

Yes, very close. Family is very important in my culture. Many young people live with their parents until they get married. And even after that, people visit their parents often and help them when they're old.

Start

I'd like to talk about my e-reader. It's a small electronic device for reading books, and I take it everywhere.

What it is

It's about the size of a small book, and it has a special screen that looks like real paper. It doesn't hurt my eyes, even after hours of reading, and the battery lasts for weeks.

When and where you got it

I got it about two years ago. My cousin bought it for me from abroad, because it wasn't easy to find in my country.

How it helps you

It helps me read much more than before. I can carry hundreds of books in my bag, and I read on the bus, in waiting rooms and before bed. It also has a dictionary, so when I read in English, I can check new words instantly.

If you didn't have it

If I didn't have it, I'd have to carry heavy books, and I'd probably read much less. I'd also spend more money, because printed English books are very expensive here. So this little device has really changed my reading habits.

  • I take it everywhereI always have it with me
  • It doesn't hurt my eyesit is comfortable for my eyes
  • the battery lasts for weeksworks for weeks without charging
  • check new words instantlylook up words immediately
  • If I didn't have it, I'd…an imaginary situation
  • changed my reading habitschanged how I read

Part 3 · Discussion

The internet and technology

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

What are some advantages of the internet?

The internet gives us information about anything in seconds. It also lets us talk to people all over the world for free. We can work, study and shop from home. For people in small towns, it opens up many opportunities.

  • in secondsvery quickly
  • for freewithout paying
  • it opens up many opportunitiesit gives many chances

What are some disadvantages of the internet?

One problem is that there's a lot of false information. Another problem is addiction. Many people spend too many hours online, especially on social media. There are also security risks, like stolen passwords and online fraud.

  • false informationinformation that is not true
  • addictionwhen you can't stop doing something
  • security risksdangers to your safety
  • online fraudstealing money by tricking people online

How has technology changed the way we communicate?

Communication is much faster and cheaper now. We can send a message or make a video call to anyone instantly. But we also communicate more with short texts and emojis, and less face to face. Some people say this makes conversations less deep.

  • much faster and cheapercompare with the past
  • instantlyimmediately
  • emojissmall pictures used in messages
  • less face to faceless in person

Should we buy every new technology we can afford?

No, I don't think so. Just because we can afford something doesn't mean we need it. Buying too many gadgets wastes money and creates electronic waste. We should buy technology only when it really makes our lives better.

  • affordhave enough money for
  • doesn't mean we need itit isn't necessary
  • electronic wasteold electronic things that are thrown away
  • really makes our lives bettertruly improves our lives

Why do some people want the latest phone or TV even when they don't need it?

For some people, it's about status. They want to show others that they have money. For others, it's just excitement about new things. Advertising also plays a big role. Companies make us feel that our old phone isn't good enough anymore.

  • it's about statusit's to show position
  • excitement about new thingsbeing excited by new products
  • plays a big rolehas a big effect
  • isn't good enough anymoreis no longer good enough

Should children have the latest devices whenever they want? Why?

No, I don't think so. Children need to learn that they can't have everything immediately. Also, too much screen time is bad for their health and their sleep. Parents should decide what devices are suitable for their child's age.

  • whenever they wantevery time they ask
  • they can't have everything immediatelythey must wait sometimes
  • too much screen timetoo many hours with screens
  • suitable for their child's ageright for that age
