Part 1 · Interview

Bicycles

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

Is a bicycle a good way to travel?

Yes, I think it's a great way to travel short distances. It's cheap, healthy and it doesn't pollute the air. In busy cities, it's often faster than a car. But it's not good for long trips or in very hot weather.

  • short distancesnot far
  • it doesn't pollute the airit doesn't make the air dirty
  • often faster than a carmake a comparison

Should there be separate lanes for bicycles?

Yes, definitely. Without bike lanes, cycling in the city is dangerous, because cars drive very fast. Separate lanes would make cyclists feel safe, and then more people would start cycling to work.

  • bike lanesparts of the road only for bicycles
  • cyclistspeople who ride bicycles
  • feel safenot feel in danger

Why should a child have a bicycle?

A bicycle is great for children. It helps them exercise and stay healthy. It also gives them some freedom and teaches them balance. And it's a lot of fun. Most adults remember the day they learned to ride a bike.

  • It helps them exerciseit makes them move
  • teaches them balancehelps them not fall
  • the day they learned to ride a bikea common memory

Do you ride a bicycle? Why?

Not very often these days. I used to ride my bike every day as a teenager. Now, the traffic in my city is too dangerous, and there aren't many bike lanes. But on holidays, I sometimes rent a bike and ride in the park.

  • Not very often these daysnot much now
  • I used to ride…a past habit
  • rent a bikepay to use a bike for a short time

Ready 1:00

Start

I'd like to talk about Malala Yousafzai. She's a young woman from Pakistan, and she's famous all over the world.

Who she is

She's an activist who fights for girls' education. She was born in 1997, in a valley in the north of Pakistan.

Why she is famous

When she was only fifteen, she was attacked on her school bus, because she spoke out about girls' right to go to school. She survived, and she didn't stop. In 2014, she won the Nobel Peace Prize. She was the youngest person ever to win it.

Would you like to meet her

Yes, I'd love to meet her. I'd like to sit with her for an hour and just listen to her story.

Why you want to meet her

I want to meet her because she's incredibly brave. Most people would be too afraid to continue after an attack like that. I'd like to ask her where she found her courage. I think meeting her would inspire me to stand up for what I believe in.

  • famous all over the worldknown everywhere
  • an activista person who works to change society
  • she spoke out about…spoke publicly about a problem
  • She survivedshe stayed alive
  • incredibly bravevery, very brave
  • stand up for what I believe indefend my beliefs

Part 3 · Discussion

Fame and celebrities

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

What qualities should a famous person have?

A famous person should be responsible, because many people, especially children, watch them. They should be honest and kind, and they should use their fame to help others, for example by supporting charities.

  • should be responsibleshould think about the results of their actions
  • use their fame to help othersuse being famous for good
  • supporting charitieshelping organisations that help people

Why do young people copy famous people?

Young people are still finding out who they are. Famous people look confident, rich and happy, so young people want to be like them. They copy their clothes, their hairstyles and even the way they talk.

  • finding out who they arelearning about themselves
  • want to be like themwant to copy them
  • even the way they talkeven their style of speaking

How do some famous people set a bad example?

Some famous people show a lifestyle that isn't healthy, like drinking too much or spending money carelessly. Some are rude or aggressive on social media. Young fans may think this behaviour is cool and copy it.

  • set a bad examplebehave in a way others shouldn't copy
  • spending money carelesslyspending without thinking
  • rude or aggressivenot polite or angry
  • think this behaviour is coolthink it's good and fashionable

Who were the famous people 50 years ago, and who will be famous in 50 years?

Fifty years ago, the most famous people were film stars, singers and politicians. Today, we also have social media influencers. In fifty years, I think famous people might be scientists working on space or AI, or maybe even AI characters themselves.

  • film starsfamous actors
  • social media influencerspeople famous online
  • maybe even AI characterseven = surprisingly

Should celebrities have a private life like ordinary people? Why?

Yes, I think they should. They're famous for their work, not for their private life. Everyone needs privacy, especially with their family. Photographers who follow celebrities' children are going too far.

  • a private lifea life away from the public
  • Everyone needs privacyeveryone needs a personal space
  • are going too farare doing too much, more than is acceptable

If you had the chance to be famous, what would your attitude be?

I'd try to stay the same person. I wouldn't want fame to change my values or my friends. I'd also try to use it for something good, for example to raise money for children's education. And I'd try to keep my family out of the spotlight.

  • stay the same personnot change
  • change my valueschange what I believe is important
  • raise moneycollect money for a good cause
  • out of the spotlightaway from public attention
