Ready 1:00

Start

I'd like to talk about my four years at university. They were some of the best years of my life.

What you did

I studied electrical engineering. Most days, I had classes in the morning and lab work in the afternoon. In my free time, I was part of the university's robotics club, and we built small robots for competitions.

Different from school

University was very different from school. At school, teachers told us exactly what to do. At university, I had more freedom, but also more responsibility. I had to plan my own time and study without anyone checking on me.

Good things about the university

My university had very good labs and some excellent professors. The campus was big and green, with a library that was open until midnight. There were also lots of clubs, for sports, music and science.

How much you enjoyed it

I enjoyed it a lot. Of course, there were stressful times, like exam weeks. But I made lifelong friends, and I learned to be independent. I sometimes miss those days, when life was simpler and full of new experiences.

  • some of the best years of my lifea strong opening
  • lab workpractical work in a laboratory
  • more freedom, but also more responsibilitya clear contrast
  • without anyone checking on meno one controlled me

Part 3 · Discussion

University education

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

Why is university education important?

University gives people the knowledge they need for professional jobs, like doctors and engineers. It also teaches people how to think critically and solve problems. And it's a time when young people become more independent and meet people from different backgrounds.

  • professional jobsjobs that need special training
  • think criticallythink carefully and question ideas
  • from different backgroundsfrom different families, places and cultures

How does university prepare students for future challenges?

At university, students learn to manage their own time and meet deadlines. They also work on group projects, which teaches them teamwork. These skills are very useful at work. But I think universities should offer more internships, so students get real work experience.

  • meet deadlinesfinish work by a fixed time
  • group projectsprojects done in a team
  • internshipsshort periods of work to get experience
  • real work experienceexperience in a real job

Should universities accept students based on school results or entrance tests? Why?

I think a mix of both is fairest. School results show how hard a student worked over many years. An entrance test shows their level on one day only, and some students get very nervous. So using both gives a more complete picture.

  • a mix of both is fairestboth together are most fair
  • over many yearsduring a long time
  • on one day onlyjust one day
  • a more complete picturea fuller understanding

Should university teachers in your country be paid more? Why?

Yes, I think so. They study for many years to become professors, but their salaries are not very high. Because of this, some good teachers leave the country or move to private companies. Better pay would keep the best people in universities.

  • Yes, I think so.a short answer
  • their salaries are not very highthey don't earn much
  • leave the countrygo to live abroad
  • Better pay would…an imaginary result

Should attending classes at university be compulsory or optional? Why?

I think it should be partly compulsory. For practical classes, like labs, students need to be there. But for big lectures, if a student can learn from the notes and videos, they should be free to choose. University students are adults, so they should take responsibility for their learning.

  • compulsory or optionalmust do or can choose
  • partly compulsorycompulsory for some classes
  • be free to choosedecide for themselves
  • take responsibility forbe in charge of

What is the importance of technical universities in your country?

They're very important. Technical universities train engineers who build roads, power stations and factories. They also produce many of the country's software developers. Without them, the country would need to depend on foreign experts.

  • technical universitiesuniversities for engineering and technology
  • train engineersteach people to be engineers
  • depend on foreign expertsneed specialists from other countries
