Part 1 · Interview
Your hometown
Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.
What is your hometown like?
It's a fairly big city, but it still feels friendly. The city centre is busy, with lots of shops and cafés, but the areas around it are quite calm. There are some nice parks, and you can see mountains from almost everywhere.
- a fairly big cityfairly = quite
- it still feels friendlyit gives a friendly feeling
- from almost everywherefrom nearly every place
Can you tell me something about the history of your hometown?
It's a very old city. People have lived there for more than two thousand years. It was an important stop on the Silk Road, so traders from China and Europe passed through it. You can still see an old caravanserai, where they used to rest.
- People have lived there for…talk about a long time
- the Silk Roadan old trade route between China and Europe
- passed through ittravelled through it
- where they used to restused to = in the past, not now
Is your hometown changing?
Yes, it's changing quickly. A lot of new apartment buildings are going up, and the city is getting bigger every year. We have a new metro line too. But some old houses are being knocked down, which makes me a bit sad.
- it's changing quicklya clear answer
- are going upare being built
- getting bigger every yeardescribe a trend
- which makes me a bit sadadd your feeling
Would you say it is a good place to live? Why?
Yes, I'd say it is. It has good schools, hospitals and universities, and life is cheaper than in the capital. The only problem is the air pollution in winter. But overall, it's a comfortable place to live.
- Yes, I'd say it is.a soft yes
- The only problem is…add one bad point
- But overall, …means when you think about everything
Part 2 · Cue card
A piece of equipment in your home
You get 1 minute to prepare and then speak for 1 to 2 minutes. Follow the four points on the card in order.
Candidate task card
Describe a piece of equipment in your home, like a computer, a fridge or a phone.
You should say:
- what it is
- what you do with it
- whether you will always keep it
- and explain why it is so important to you
Start
I'd like to talk about my laptop. I use it more than any other thing in my home.
What it is
It's a silver laptop. I bought it about three years ago with my first big salary. It's light, so I can carry it easily, and the battery lasts all day.
What you do with it
I use it for almost everything. During the day, I use it for work. In the evening, I watch films on it, read the news and video-call my friends. I also use it to study English and take online courses.
Will you always keep it
I don't think I'll keep it forever. Technology gets old very fast. In two or three years, it'll probably be too slow, and I'll need a new one. But I might give it to my younger cousin, because it'll still be fine for school work.
Why it is important
It's important to me because it connects me to my work, my friends and the world. Without it, I couldn't do my job. It's also my main tool for learning. So, in a way, my laptop is like my office, my cinema and my classroom in one small box.
- I use it more than any other thinga strong opening
- the battery lasts all dayit works all day without charging
- I use it for almost everythinga general start
- I don't think I'll keep it foreverforever = for all time
- Without it, I couldn't…show how important it is
- in a way, …means if you think about it in one way
Part 3 · Discussion
Technology in daily life
Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.
How has the technology we use in daily life changed in the last 20 years?
It has changed enormously. Twenty years ago, most people had a home phone and a big TV. Now, almost everyone has a smartphone, which is a phone, a camera, a map and a bank all in one. We also have smart TVs, and we can pay for things with our phones.
- enormouslyvery, very much
- Twenty years ago, … Now, …compare the past and present
- all in onetogether in one thing
How do families in your country use modern devices?
Most families use smartphones a lot, for chatting, watching videos and paying bills. Many homes have a smart TV, and children often use tablets for games and school work. Older people are also learning to use phones, mainly to call their children and see photos of their grandchildren.
- devicesmachines like phones and tablets
- paying billspaying for electricity, water, etc.
- school workhomework and study for school
- mainly to…mostly to
What developments do you think technology will bring in the future?
I think robots will do more housework, like cleaning and cooking. Cars will probably drive themselves. And doctors will use artificial intelligence to find diseases earlier. These changes could make life easier, but they might also take away some jobs.
- developmentsnew changes or inventions
- drive themselvesdrive without a person
- artificial intelligencecomputers that can think and learn, AI
- take away some jobscause some people to lose work
Do you think these developments are important? Why?
Yes, many of them are very important. For example, new medical technology saves lives every day. Technology also helps people with disabilities live more independently. But some developments are just for fun, and they're not really important, like a new phone every year.
- saves livesstops people from dying
- people with disabilitiespeople with a physical or mental problem
- live more independentlylive without much help
- just for funonly for enjoyment
How can technology affect relationships between family members?
It can affect them in both ways. On the positive side, families who live far apart can see each other on video calls. On the negative side, people sometimes sit in the same room, but everyone is looking at their own phone. So they don't really talk to each other.
- in both wayspositively and negatively
- live far apartlive a long distance from each other
- everyone is looking at their own phonedescribe a common situation
- they don't really talkreally = truly
Should we use all the technology available to make our lives better? Why?
Not all of it. We should use technology that really solves a problem, like a washing machine or a medical device. But we don't need every new gadget. Some gadgets are expensive, they break easily, and they make us lazy. So I think we should choose carefully.
- Not all of it.a short, clear answer
- really solves a problemis truly useful
- gadgeta small, clever machine
- choose carefullythink well before deciding
