Part 1 · Interview
Hometown and free time
Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.
Can you describe your hometown?
My hometown is a medium-sized city in the centre of the country. It's quite old, and it's famous for its gardens and traditional houses. The people are friendly, and life is slower than in the capital. It's very hot in summer, but the winters are mild.

What do you like doing in your free time?

You get 1 minute to prepare and then speak for 1 to 2 minutes. Follow the four points on the card in order.
Candidate task card
Describe a city you have visited that impressed you.
You should say:
- where it is and why you visited it
- what you did there
- what the most attractive part of this city was
- and explain why this city impressed you so much
Start
I'd like to talk about Istanbul. I visited it two years ago, and it really impressed me.
Where it is and why you visited
Istanbul is in Turkey, and it's the biggest city in the country. I went there with my family for a holiday, because it's close to my country and the flights are cheap.
What you did there
We stayed there for a week. We visited famous places, like the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar. We also took a boat trip on the Bosphorus, and we tried a lot of Turkish food. I loved the fresh bread and the sweets.
The most attractive part
For me, the most attractive part was the old town. It has narrow streets, small cafés and very old buildings. In the evening, you can hear music from the restaurants, and the streets are full of people.
Why it impressed you
It impressed me because it mixes old and new so well. In one street, you see a building that's five hundred years old, and in the next street there's a modern shopping centre. The city is also on two continents, Europe and Asia, which is really special. I'd love to go back one day.

Part 3 · Discussion
Living in cities
Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.
What are the negative aspects of crowded cities?
The biggest problem is traffic. People spend hours in their cars every day. Crowded cities also have more air pollution and more noise. And because many people want to live there, rents are very high, so life is expensive and stressful.
- negative aspectsbad sides
- The biggest problem is…give the main point
- air pollutiondirty, unhealthy air
- rents are very highrent = money you pay to live in a home
What can the authorities do to reduce traffic in a city?
They should improve public transport, so people don't need their cars. For example, they could build more metro lines and run buses more often. They could also make people pay to drive in the city centre. Some cities in Europe do this, and it works well.
- authoritiesthe people with official power, like the city government
- improve public transportmake buses and trains better
- run buses more oftenhave buses come more frequently
- it works wellit has good results
What facilities does a city have that people in the countryside cannot enjoy?
Cities have big hospitals with specialist doctors. They also have universities, cinemas, theatres and shopping centres. And there are more job opportunities. In the countryside, people often need to travel to the city for these things.
- facilitiesbuildings and services for people to use
- specialist doctorsdoctors for one kind of problem
- job opportunitieschances to get a job
- travel to the city for these thingsexplain the problem
Do you think the architectural design of a city is important? Why?
Yes, I think it's very important. Beautiful buildings make people feel happier and prouder of their city. Good design is also practical. For example, wide pavements and green spaces make a city better for walking. Ugly, grey buildings can make a city feel depressing.
- architectural designthe way buildings are planned and look
- prouder of their cityproud = happy because something is good and yours
- green spacesparks and areas with grass and trees
- depressingmaking you feel sad
Why do so many people move to cities each year? What problems does this cause?
Most people move to cities to find work and a better education for their children. In villages, there aren't many jobs. But when too many people move to a city, it becomes overcrowded. Housing gets expensive, the traffic gets worse, and some people end up living in poor areas.
- to find workto get a job
- overcrowdedwith too many people
- Housing gets expensivehousing = places to live
- end upfinally be in a situation you didn't plan
What can be done to reduce pollution in cities?
First, we need cleaner transport, like electric buses and more bike lanes. Second, old cars that produce a lot of smoke should be taken off the roads. Third, cities should plant more trees. And factories should be moved outside the city.
- First, … Second, … Third, …organise a list of ideas
- bike lanesparts of the road only for bikes
- taken off the roadsnot allowed to be driven
