Part 1 · Interview
Study
Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.
What subjects are you studying?
I'm studying computer science at university. This year, my main subjects are programming, databases and computer networks. I also have a general English course, which I really enjoy.

Why did you choose those subjects?
I've always been interested in computers. When I was a teenager, I spent hours playing games, and I wanted to know how they worked. Also, there are lots of jobs in this field, so I thought it was a smart choice for my future.

Part 2 · Cue card
A friend you like to spend time with
You get 1 minute to prepare and then speak for 1 to 2 minutes. Follow the four points on the card in order.
Candidate task card
Describe a friend you like to spend time with.
You should say:
- when and how you met
- how often you see this friend
- what kind of personality your friend has
- and explain why you like spending time with this friend
Start
I'd like to talk about my friend Reza. He's been my best friend for more than ten years.
How you met
We met in high school. On the first day, we sat next to each other in class, and we started talking about football. We've been friends ever since.
How often you see him
These days, we're both busy with work, so I see him about once a week. We usually meet on Thursday evenings, and we also text each other almost every day.
His personality
He's very easy-going and funny. Nothing seems to worry him. He's also a great listener. When I talk to him about a problem, he listens carefully, and he gives me honest advice.
Why you like spending time with him
I like spending time with him because I can be myself. I don't need to pretend or be careful about what I say. We can talk for hours, or just sit and watch a match without saying much. After a meeting with him, I always feel more relaxed.

Part 3 · Discussion
Friendship
Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.
Is friendship important in your culture? Why?
Yes, it's very important. In my culture, people spend a lot of time with their friends, and friends help each other a lot. For example, if you're moving house, your friends will come and help you carry things. A good friend is almost like a member of your family.
- Yes, it's very important.a clear first answer
- help each otherhelp one another
- if you're moving housemoving house = going to live in a new home
- almost like a member of your familymake a comparison
How many close friends can a person usually have? Why?
I think most people can only have three or four close friends. A close friendship needs a lot of time and trust. We can't give that much time to many people. So we can have lots of friends, but only a few really close ones.
- close friendsvery good friends
- needs a lot of time and trusttrust = believing someone is honest
- only a few really close onesones = friends, to avoid repeating
Some people say friends are more important than family. What do you think?
I don't agree. For me, family comes first. My family will always be there for me, even when I make big mistakes. Friends are very important too, and sometimes we can talk to friends about things we can't tell our parents. But in difficult times, family is usually the strongest support.
- I don't agree.a clear opinion
- family comes firstfamily is the most important
- will always be there for mewill always help me
- in difficult timeswhen life is hard
What are the qualities of a good friend?
A good friend is honest and loyal. They tell you the truth, even when it's not what you want to hear. They also keep your secrets. And a good friend is happy for you when you succeed, not jealous.

- honest and loyalloyal = always supports you
- even when it's not what you want to heareven if it is unpleasant
- jealousunhappy because someone else has something you want
Why can children make friends easily, but adults can't?
Children are more open. They can start playing with another child in the park after one minute. Adults are busier, and they often worry about what other people think. Also, adults usually see the same people every day at work, so they have fewer chances to meet new people.
- make friendsstart a friendship
- Children are more openthey easily accept new people
- they often worry about what other people thinka common reason
- fewer chancesfewer opportunities
Why do people these days have more online friends than real-life friends?
Because it's very easy to make friends online. You can talk to people with the same interests from anywhere in the world, and you don't need to leave your home. But I think online friendships are often less deep. It's hard to have a real connection only through a screen.
- it's very easy to…give the main reason
- with the same interestswho like the same things
- less deepnot as strong
- a real connectiona strong feeling of being close
