Part 1 · Interview
Clothes
Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.
How important are clothes and fashion to you? Why?
Clothes are important to me, but fashion isn't. I want to look clean and neat, especially at work. But I don't follow trends, because they change too fast, and it's a waste of money.
- look clean and neatlook tidy
- I don't follow trendsI don't copy new fashions
- a waste of moneya bad use of money
What kind of clothes do you dislike? Why?
I dislike tight clothes, because they're uncomfortable. I also don't like very formal clothes, like suits and ties. I feel like I can't move or breathe properly in them.
- tight clothesclothes that are too small
- very formal clothesvery official, serious clothes
- breathe properlybreathe in the normal way
How different are the clothes you wear now from ten years ago?
Quite different. Ten years ago, I was a teenager, and I wore sports clothes almost every day. Now I wear shirts and trousers for work. My colours are also calmer now, mostly blue, grey and white.
- Quite different.a short answer
- sports clothesclothes for sport, like tracksuits
- My colours are also calmer nowless bright colours
What do you think the clothes we wear say about us?
Clothes can say a lot. They can show our job, our personality and sometimes our culture. For example, someone in bright, colourful clothes might be outgoing. But we shouldn't judge people only by their clothes.

- outgoingfriendly and social
- judge people only by their clothesdecide what people are like from clothes
Part 2 · Cue card
A festival that is important in your country
You get 1 minute to prepare and then speak for 1 to 2 minutes. Follow the four points on the card in order.
Candidate task card
Describe a festival that is important in your country.
You should say:
- when the festival takes place
- what you did during it
- what you like or dislike about it
- and explain why this festival is important
Start
I'd like to talk about Yalda Night. It's a small but very special festival in my country.
When it takes place
It takes place on the longest night of the year, around the twentieth of December, at the start of winter. It's thousands of years old.
What you did
Last year, my whole family met at my grandmother's house. We stayed up very late, eating watermelon, pomegranates and nuts. My grandfather read poems from Hafez, and everyone made a wish before he opened the book.
Likes and dislikes
I like that it's simple and warm. It's not about expensive gifts; it's about being together. The only thing I don't like is that the prices of pomegranates and watermelons go up a lot before Yalda.
Why it is important
It's important because it brings families together during the cold, dark winter. The idea is that after the longest night, the days get longer, so it's a celebration of light and hope. It also keeps our old traditions and poetry alive for young people.
- It takes place on…it happens on
- We stayed up very latewe didn't sleep until late
- made a wishhoped for something
- it's about being togetherthe main point is being with family
- a celebration of light and hopea festival for good things to come

Part 3 · Discussion
Festivals in the modern world
Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.
Why are festivals important events in the working year?
Festivals give people a break from work. They have time to rest, travel and see family. After a holiday, people usually come back to work with more energy. Festivals also give everyone something to look forward to.
- a break from worka rest from work
- with more energyfeeling more active
- something to look forward tosomething to feel happy about in the future
Is the original meaning of festivals often lost today? Is this good or bad?
I think it's sometimes lost. For many people, festivals are now mainly about shopping and holidays. It's a bit sad, because the old meanings are interesting and important. But at least people still celebrate and spend time together.
- the original meaningthe first, true meaning
- mainly about shoppingmostly about buying things
- at least…a positive point
Will new festivals be introduced in the future? What kind?
Probably. Maybe there will be festivals connected to the environment, like a day to plant trees or clean the beaches. There might also be online festivals, where people from all over the world celebrate together.
- connected to the environmentrelated to nature
- plant treesput new trees in the ground
- from all over the worldfrom many countries
What role does the media play in festivals?
The media makes festivals more popular, because it shows them to more people. It also teaches people about other cultures' festivals. But sometimes the media makes festivals too commercial, by showing many adverts for things to buy.
- makes festivals more popularhelps more people know them
- other cultures' festivalsfestivals from other places
- too commercialtoo focused on selling
Is it good or bad to watch festivals on TV? Why?
It's good for people who can't go, like old or sick people. They can still enjoy the festival. But watching on TV isn't the same as being there. You miss the atmosphere, the smells and the feeling of being part of the crowd.
- isn't the same as being theredifferent from going in person
- the atmospherethe feeling of the place
- part of the crowdone of many people there
How might globalisation affect festivals around the world?
Globalisation spreads festivals to new countries. For example, Halloween and Valentine's Day are now celebrated in many places. This can be fun, but local festivals might become less important. I think countries should enjoy new festivals but protect their own.
- globalisationthe world becoming more connected
- spreads festivalscarries festivals to new places
- protect their ownkeep their own traditions
