Part 1 · Interview

Names

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

How did your parents choose your name?

My parents chose my name, Ali, after my grandfather. In my culture, it's quite common to name a child after a grandparent, to show respect. It's also a short, simple name, so it's easy for everyone to say.

  • after my grandfatherwith the same name as him
  • to show respectto honour someone
  • easy for everyone to saysimple to pronounce

Does your name have any special meaning?

Yes, Ali means 'high' or 'great' in Arabic. It's also an important religious name, so it has a special meaning for many families in my country.

  • … means 'high'explain the meaning
  • an important religious namea name connected to religion
  • a special meaning for…it is important to

Is your name common or unusual in your country?

It's very common. In my class at school, there were three boys called Ali, so the teacher used our family names. Sometimes I wished I had a more unusual name, but now I like it.

  • It's very common.many people have it
  • the teacher used our family namescalled us by our last names
  • I wished I had…I wanted to have

If you could change your name, would you? Why?

No, I wouldn't. My name connects me to my grandfather, and it's part of who I am. Also, changing it would be very complicated, with all the official documents!

  • If you could…, would you?imaginary question
  • No, I wouldn't.a clear no

Start

I'd like to talk about a documentary called 'My Octopus Teacher'. It was one of the most interesting things I've watched in years.

What it was about

It's about a man in South Africa who goes diving every day in a cold underwater forest. He meets an octopus and visits her every day for a whole year. The film shows their unusual friendship and the octopus's life.

Why you watched it

A friend recommended it to me. At first, I thought a film about an octopus would be boring, but it had won an Oscar, so I decided to give it a try one evening.

What you learnt

I learned that octopuses are incredibly intelligent. They can change colour, hide using shells and solve problems. I also learned how connected all the animals in the ocean are.

Why it was interesting

It was interesting because it changed how I see animals. I never thought a sea creature could have a personality. The photography was beautiful, and the story was very emotional. It also made me think about how we should protect the oceans. I've recommended it to almost everyone I know.

  • one of the most interesting things I've watched in yearsa strong opening
  • goes divingswims underwater with equipment
  • their unusual friendshipa strange relationship
  • give it a trytry it
  • incredibly intelligentvery, very smart
  • it changed how I see animalsit changed my opinion of animals

Are there too many game shows on TV nowadays? Why?

I think there are quite a lot, but people seem to enjoy them. Game shows are cheap to make, and they're easy to watch after a long day. But I'd like to see more documentaries and educational programmes instead.
