Part 1 · Interview

Photographs

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

What type of photos do you like taking? Why?

I like taking photos of nature, especially sunsets and mountains. Nature changes every day, so every photo is different. I also take a lot of photos of food, which my friends find funny.

  • every photo is differentno two photos are the same
  • which my friends find funnymy friends think it's funny

What do you do with the photos you take?

Most of them stay on my phone, honestly. I share the best ones on Instagram or send them to my family. Once a year, I choose my favourite photos and print a small album.

  • honestlyto tell the truth
  • the best onesthe best photos
  • print a small albummake a little photo book

When you visit other places, do you take photos or buy postcards? Why?

I take photos. My own photos show what I really saw and who I was with. Postcards are beautiful, but they're not personal. Sometimes I buy a postcard to send to my grandmother, though, because she loves them.

  • what I really sawwhat I actually saw
  • they're not personalthey don't show my own experience
  • thoughbut, at the end of a sentence

Do you like people taking photos of you? Why?

Not really. I always feel a bit uncomfortable in front of the camera, and I never know what to do with my hands! But I like group photos with friends, because everyone is laughing and it feels natural.

  • I always feel a bit uncomfortablenot relaxed
  • in front of the camerawhen someone photographs me
  • it feels naturalit feels normal and relaxed

  • where you were on this day
  • what the weather was like
  • what you did during the day
  • and explain why you thought the weather was perfect
Ready 1:00

Start

I'd like to talk about a day last April, when the weather was absolutely perfect. I still remember how good it felt.

Where you were

I was in Shiraz, visiting my cousins during the Nowruz holiday. Shiraz is famous for its gardens, and spring is the best season there.

What the weather was like

It was sunny, but not hot, about twenty-two degrees. There was a light, cool breeze, and the sky was completely blue, with no clouds. The air smelled of orange blossoms, because the orange trees were in flower.

What you did

We spent the whole day outside. In the morning, we walked in Eram Garden. Then we had a picnic lunch on the grass in a park. In the afternoon, we visited the tomb of the poet Hafez, and in the evening, we sat in a garden café until late.

Why it was perfect

It was perfect because it was ideal for being outside all day. I didn't feel too hot or too cold, and I didn't need a jacket. The flowers, the sunshine and the soft wind made everyone happy and relaxed. Days like that remind me how important simple things are.

  • absolutely perfectcompletely perfect
  • a light, cool breezea soft, cool wind
  • orange blossomsflowers of the orange tree
  • We spent the whole day outsideall day outdoors
  • ideal for being outsideperfect for staying outdoors
  • how important simple things aresmall things matter

Part 3 · Discussion

Weather

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

What types of weather do people in your country dislike most? Why?

Most people dislike very hot summers, especially in the south, where it can be over fifty degrees. People also dislike dusty days, when sandstorms make the air dirty. In big cities, cold winter days with air pollution are also unpopular.

  • over fifty degreesmore than 50 °C
  • sandstormsstrong winds full of sand
  • unpopularnot liked

What jobs can be affected by different weather conditions? Why?

Farmers are affected the most, because their crops need the right weather. Builders and delivery drivers also have problems in very hot or snowy weather. And pilots and fishermen depend on good weather for safety.

  • are affected the mostchange most because of it
  • their cropsthe plants they grow
  • depend on good weather for safetyneed good weather to be safe

Are there festivals in your country that celebrate a season or type of weather?

Yes. Nowruz celebrates the start of spring and new life. Yalda Night celebrates the longest night of the year, at the start of winter. Families stay up late, eat watermelon and pomegranates, and read poetry.

  • the start of springthe beginning of spring
  • the longest night of the yearthe night with the most dark hours
  • stay up latedon't sleep early

How important is it for everyone to check the next day's weather? Why?

It's useful for everyone, but it's very important for some people, like farmers, drivers and people planning trips. For most people, it just helps them choose the right clothes or take an umbrella.

  • It's useful for everyone, but…a balanced start
  • people planning tripspeople who will travel
  • take an umbrellacarry an umbrella

What is the best way to get accurate information about the weather?

I think official weather apps and websites are the best, because they use data from satellites and weather stations. TV weather reports are good too. Social media is not reliable for weather, because people share old or wrong information.

  • accurate informationcorrect information
  • satellites and weather stationstools that measure weather
  • not reliablecan't be trusted

How easy is it to predict the weather in your country? Why?

In most of the country, it's quite easy, because the weather is dry and stable. But in the mountains and the north, it's harder, because the weather can change very quickly. Climate change is also making the weather less predictable.

  • predictsay what will happen
  • dry and stablewithout rain and not changing much
  • less predictableharder to know in advance
