Ready 1:00

Start

I'd like to talk about the day I got my first job. It was a real turning point in my life.

What it was

It was a job as a junior developer in a software company. I had applied to many companies, and this one finally said yes.

How old you were

I was twenty-two at the time. I had just finished university, and I was quite worried about my future.

What happened

I had three interviews, and the last one was really hard. They asked me to solve a problem on a computer while they watched. A week later, my phone rang, and the manager told me I had the job. I was so happy that I ran to tell my mother in the kitchen.

Why it is important

It's important because it was the start of my career. For the first time, I earned my own money and became more independent. I also learned a lot from my colleagues there. Many of the skills I use today, I learned in that first job.

  • more independentable to live without help

Part 3 · Discussion

Celebrations

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

Is it important to celebrate different events in our lives? Why?

Yes, I think it is. Celebrations help us stop and notice good moments, like a birthday or a new job. Life is busy, and we often forget to be thankful. A celebration also brings family and friends together, and that makes the memory stronger.

  • we often forget to…talk about a common habit
  • that makes the memory strongerexplain a result

Do most people in your country celebrate family occasions at home or in a restaurant?

Most people celebrate at home. For birthdays and small parties, it's cheaper and more relaxed, and the food is home-made. But for big events, like weddings, people usually rent a hall or a garden, because they invite hundreds of guests.

  • family occasionsspecial family days, like birthdays
  • more relaxedless formal, more comfortable
  • home-mademade at home, not bought
  • rent a hallpay to use a big room for a short time

Some people say we should give the money for celebrations to poor people. What do you think?

I understand this idea, and I think spending a huge amount on a wedding is a waste. But I don't think we should stop celebrating. A simple party can be cheap and still make people happy. The best option is to do both: have a smaller celebration and give some money to charity.

  • I understand this idea, and…accept part of the other opinion first
  • is a wastemeans a bad use of money or time
  • The best option is to…give your solution
  • charityan organisation that helps people in need

How can celebrations bring people together?

At a celebration, people stop working and spend time with each other. Relatives who live far away come and visit. Neighbours meet, and even people who had an argument often make up. For example, at Nowruz, families visit each other's homes, and old problems are often forgotten.

  • spend time with each otherbe together
  • had an argumenthad a fight with words
  • make upbecome friends again after a fight
  • For example, at…give a real example

What are some important historical events in your country?

One of the most important events was the Constitutional Revolution, more than a hundred years ago. It gave the country its first parliament. Another important event was the discovery of oil, which changed the economy completely. Children learn about both of these events at school.

  • One of the most important events was…start with the main example
  • Another important event was…add a second example
  • changed the economy completelydescribe a big result

Is it right for governments to spend money on national celebrations?

I think a small amount is fine. National celebrations make people feel proud and united, and they're good for tourism. But if people are struggling to pay for food and rent, the government shouldn't spend millions on fireworks and big shows. It's a question of balance.

  • a small amount is fineaccept part of the idea
  • unitedtogether, as one group
  • struggling to pay for…having difficulty paying
  • It's a question of balancemeans we need the right amount
