Part 1 · Interview

Shops

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

What types of shops do you usually go to?

Mostly, I go to the supermarket near my house to buy food. I also go to bookshops quite often, because I love reading. For clothes and electronics, I usually shop online now, because it's easier and sometimes cheaper.

  • Mostly, …means most of the time
  • quite oftenmeans many times, but not always
  • I usually shop onlinemeans I buy things on the internet

What is the shop you visit most often?

It's a small supermarket at the end of my street. I go there almost every day, because it's very close and it has everything I need. The owner is friendly, and he knows me, so sometimes we chat for a few minutes.

  • at the end of my streetdescribe where a place is
  • almost every daymeans nearly every day
  • it has everything I needa simple reason
  • we chatchat = talk in a friendly, easy way

Did your parents take you to different shops when you were a child?

Yes, they did. My mother often took me to the local bazaar. I remember it was very busy and noisy, with lots of colours and smells. I didn't enjoy waiting while she shopped, but I loved it when she bought me sweets at the end.

What changes have you seen in shops these days?

The biggest change is that most shops now accept card payments, so you don't need cash. There are also many more big shopping centres. And a lot of small shops have started selling online, through Instagram or their own websites.

Ready 1:00

Start

I'd like to talk about a magazine called National Geographic. I've been reading it for several years.

What it is

It's a monthly magazine about nature, science, history and travel. I usually read it on my phone, but sometimes I buy the paper copy.

What kind of articles

It has long articles about animals, different cultures and new discoveries. The best thing about it is the photos. They're really beautiful, and some of them are taken in places most people will never visit.

Is it popular

Yes, it's quite popular in my country, especially among students and people who like travelling. You can find it in most bookshops in big cities.

Why it is important

It's important to me because it helps me learn about the world in an easy way. After a long day at work, I don't want to read the news, which is often negative. This magazine relaxes me, and I always learn something new. It's also good for my English.

  • I've been reading it for…talk about something that started in the past and continues now

Part 3 · Discussion

News and the internet

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

Why do people read newspapers and magazines?

People read newspapers to find out what's happening in the world. Magazines are different. They're usually about a special interest, like fashion, sport or science. So people read them mainly for fun, or to learn more about their hobby.

  • to find out what's happeningfind out = learn information
  • They're usually about…describe the topic
  • mainly for funmainly = mostly

Do people in your country just read the headlines, or the entire story?

I think most people just read the headlines. Everyone is busy, and we see the news on our phones, between other things. So people scroll quickly and only stop when a story looks really interesting. Older people, though, still read the full article in the newspaper.

  • headlinesthe titles of news stories, in large letters
  • scroll quicklymove down a screen fast
  • Older people, though, …though = but, at the end of an idea
  • the full articlethe whole text

Do people in rural areas have the same access to news as people in cities?

Not completely. Most villages have TV and radio now, so people can follow the main news. But in some rural areas, the internet is still slow, so it's harder to read news online. Also, newspapers are often hard to find outside big cities.

  • rural areasvillages and the countryside
  • access tomeans a way to get or use something
  • Not completely.a soft no
  • hard to findmeans not easy to get

What are the advantages of the internet for getting news? Are there any disadvantages?

The main advantage is speed. You can read about an event a few minutes after it happens, and usually for free. You can also compare news from different sources. The biggest disadvantage is fake news. Anyone can post anything online, so it's sometimes hard to know what's true.

  • The main advantage is…start with the best point
  • for freewithout paying
  • fake newsfalse stories that look like real news
  • what's truewhat is correct and real

How has the internet changed the lives of students?

It has changed their lives completely. Students can find information for their homework in seconds. They can also take online courses and watch lessons on YouTube. On the other hand, the internet can be a big distraction. Many students spend hours on social media instead of studying.

  • a big distractionsomething that stops you from focusing

Should all countries adopt the latest technology? Why?

I think they should, but carefully. New technology can improve health care, education and business. But it's expensive, and people need training to use it well. So I think poorer countries should first focus on the most useful technology, like good internet, before buying everything new.

  • adoptmeans start to use
  • I think they should, but carefullya balanced yes
  • people need trainingtraining = learning how to do something
  • focus on the most useful…choose what matters most
