Part 1 · Interview
Visitors
Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.
What would you suggest a visitor should see and do in your country?
I'd suggest visiting the old cities, like Isfahan and Shiraz. They have beautiful mosques, gardens and bazaars. Visitors should also try the local food. And if they have time, a trip to the desert is amazing, especially at night, when you can see thousands of stars.

- try the local foodmeans eat the food people eat there

Are there any traditional arts or music you would recommend?
Yes, I'd recommend Persian carpets. They're handmade, and some of them take months to finish. For music, visitors could listen to traditional Persian music. It's played on old instruments, like the tar and the santoor, and it sounds very calm and emotional.

Candidate task card
Describe a memorable event in your life.
You should say:
- when the event took place
- where the event took place
- what happened exactly
- and explain why this event was memorable for you
Start
I'd like to talk about my graduation day. It was one of the happiest days of my life.
When it was
It took place about four years ago, at the end of my bachelor's degree.
Where it was
The ceremony was held in the big hall of my university. It was decorated with flowers, and there were hundreds of students and parents there.
What happened
First, the head of the university gave a speech. Then, they called our names one by one, and we walked onto the stage to get our certificates. My parents were sitting in the second row, and they were clapping very loudly. After the ceremony, we took lots of photos, and then my family took me out for dinner.
Why it was memorable
It was memorable because it was the result of four years of hard work. I also saw how proud my parents were. My father isn't very emotional, but that day he hugged me, and I could see tears in his eyes. I'll never forget that moment.

Part 3 · Discussion
Ceremonies, marriage and the news
Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.
How important are ceremonies in our lives?
I think they're quite important. Ceremonies, like weddings and graduations, mark the big moments in our lives. They bring family and friends together, and they help us remember those days. Without them, life would feel a bit ordinary.
- mark the big momentsmark = show that something important happened
- bring family and friends togethermeans help people meet
- Without them, life would…imagine the opposite
Do you think the role of ceremonies will change in the future?
Yes, I think they'll become smaller and simpler. Big weddings are very expensive now, so many young couples prefer a small party with close friends. Also, some ceremonies are already happening online. For example, during the pandemic, many people watched weddings on video calls.

- close friendsvery good friends
- during the pandemicthe time of Covid-19
Have attitudes toward marriage changed in recent years?
Yes, a lot. In the past, people got married very young, often in their early twenties. Nowadays, many people get married later, because they want to finish their education and find a good job first. Also, young people choose their partners themselves, instead of their parents choosing for them.

In what ways do men and women feel differently about marriage?
It depends on the person, but in general, I think women worry more about choosing the right partner, because marriage changes their life more. Men often worry more about money, like buying a house and paying for the wedding. But these days, both of them usually want an equal relationship.

What sort of national events make headlines in your country?
Usually, the economy is the biggest news, for example when prices go up. Sports also make headlines, especially when our national football team plays. And of course, natural disasters, like earthquakes, are always on the front page.

- the biggest newsthe most important news
- are always on the front pagethe first page of a newspaper, for the most important news
Does the media in your country pay more attention to global or national events?
I'd say they focus more on national events. Most news programmes start with local news, like the economy and politics. Global events only get a lot of attention when they're really big, like a war or the World Cup. I think we should hear more about the rest of the world.
